Our Story

History of the NPIP

In 2002, a group of Washington non profits joined together to survey the possibility of forming an insurance pool.

Partnered with Canfield, a leader in pool administration.

With the backing of the State Insurance Commissioner’s Office and many State Senators, language was drafted for the new legislation known as Senate Bill 5869.

Legislation was passed on March 31, 2004, to allow non profit organizations to pool insurance.

NPIP was formed on August 20, 2004.

"NPIP has given Spokane Neighborhood Action Programs stability and consistency.  We now have one major carrier that is competitively priced with better coverage: both lower deductibles and higher limits."

Larry Stuckart, Executive Director, Spokane Neighborhood Action Partners

"Paratransit Services was hit hard by the sharp increase in insurance premiums from 2002-2005.  In an effort to stabilize our insurance costs and provide hands on risk management we saw a need to band together other non-profits in forming a membership driven program.  Paratransit Services highly recommends NPIP."

    Darlene Riley, EVP/CFO, Paratransit Services

"I joined NPIP because I was looking for a way to address the escalating cost of coverage for our programs and to build a more responsive relationship with my insurance carriers.  I didn’t want to have to continue changing agents and rebuilding those relationships in order to find the best coverage."

Bill Eby, Transportation Director, Neighborhood House

"I joined NPIP because I had been operating a seven agency, 47 vehicle insurance pool using the Council on Aging & Human Services as the “master policy” holder. When the market hardened severely we were unable to secure insurance, including coverage unrelated to our transportation program, e.g., employment practices. As a member of CTA-NW I was aware of the initiative to create NPIP and joined immediately."

Karl Johanson, Executive Director, Council on Aging & Human Services
